North County Biz blogger Sarah Tully has a great piece on experienced professionals, laid off from the housing and other destroyed markets, who snapped up seasonal jobs at malls and retailers usually done by teenagers who make some cash before heading back to school.
The bad times turned out to be a boon for such seasonal employers who are reaping the benefits of a more mature and stable workforce.
One example is Vivian Flores. The struggling real estate agent is using her considerable selling skills at the jewelry counter of a JCPenney to make ends meet (“Right now it’s kind of heartbreaking with the kind of money I used to make,” she says. “Eight dollars an hour is better than nothing.”)
